Gilgamesh Vol. 3: Wake
for the Undead
|
The twists, turns, and deception of Gilgamesh aren't even
close to being over; not yet at least. Each volume beyond the first
has been answering some questions, but also raising many more, and
there still is no clear revelation on who is right; the Countess of
Gilgamesh still isn't making her true intentions clear either.
As we find in the third volume of the series, "Wake for the Undead,"
even more things are developing to complicate matters.
The previous volume left fans hanging with the promise of yet
another battle between Orga and Gilgamesh, and this time Tatsuya
would be involved for the first time, and it's the perfect
opportunity to test what he's learned with his Dynamis. The members
of Gilgamesh however have never been ones to put themselves in a
losing situation, and when things look bad, or they have at least
said there peace as the case really ends up being here, they
teleport away. Their real objective is to sway Tatsuya to their
side, or so it seems, but they still haven't accomplished that goal.
Tatsuya is starting to question many things, and in particular, he
has questions about his father, something that's expected since he's
learned that he associated with the Countess before the terrorist
attack occurred. She still isn't giving any answers and brushes them
aside, leaving Tatsuya and the others to break into a company
headquarters that may hold the information. Interestingly enough,
this becomes similar to the first episode, as there are clones in
jars present. More horrifying however are the robots that have
living tissue and brains inside them. By the end of the volume, it
is revealed that Tatsuya is a clone, and it would be safe to assume
that this is true of the others, and probably Gilgamesh as well.
Kiyoko also makes a brief appearance, and though she has tried her
hand at working at a piano shop, that didn't quite work out. She
lies to her brother about it, but the truth is that she's working at
a nightclub, the full extent of her work left to the imagination.
The Countess knows all too well what she's doing though, but her
presence at her work is more for information, not to belittle her.
I was a little worried that Gilgamesh was going to become a
series that features a battle between the two forces in every
episode, but fortunately, that ends up not being the case. Instead,
much of it has become a quest for answers on Tetsuya's part with
very little coming to him in the way of answers. Also, this volume
brings a new faction into the thick of things and now Tatsuya and
the others are caught right in the middle. There's also the strange
case that Fuko seems to have a strange allergic reaction to Tatsuya
when she's around him recently, but this ends up being a recent
development, and we're simply left wondering why it is occurring.
That's yet another thing to keep you coming back though. There also
is becoming a little more disobedience with the children and it
seems that the Countess may slowly be losing control of them, and
that really would be all for the better as she really doesn't seem
that she should be trusted to any great length.
Once again we find on the third volume that while ADV loves to keep
a theme going by adding the same variety of bonus features, they
also will try and add at least on little extra with Gilgamesh.
This volume has the same feature that was presented at the Alamo to
give people just a taste of what was to come. It's a collection of
clips, some of the dubbed English as well as snippets of interviews
with those involved. The DVD also has the opening and closing
animations once again as well as character and background sketches.
I'm hoping that future volumes may have interviews with the Japanese
staff, or perhaps even some bits of the music from the series.
Gilgamesh really has an interesting soundtrack that covers many
different styles.
Although some aspects of Gilgamesh are becoming very clear,
but the future still remains nothing more than a cloudy mystery.
This is a series that will keep you guess as to what the truth
really is at the very least, but there is so much more. With it's
dark and brooding sense of style and approach, Gilgamesh
isn't going to warm your heart, but this is one of those times where
its appropriate to embrace the darkness.
Episode 10 - Saint Terrorism
The battle with Gilgamesh is taken to the streets, but Fuko soon
finds herself out numbered. Luckily, Isamu and Toru come to help
her, but Tatsuya meanwhile is having a tough time of his own. The
fight is over nearly as quickly as it begins and the children are
granted some free time to enjoy themselves.
Episode 11 - Far From XX
Tatsuya is curious about the type of man his father was, by the
Countess won't give him much information. After mentioned it at
dinner, his Isamu knows where they may be able to obtain more
information and together the children make an unscheduled trip.
However, not only is the information they collect a little strange,
but there's something quite inhuman lurking in the shadows as well.
Episode 12 - die Lustige Witwe
It's been quite a while, but Tatsuya finally has the chance to spend
the day with his sister. Their day at the amusement park isn't
without incident though when he accidentally insults her, but she is
quickly over it and it seems that she's doing well for herself. The
Countess on the other hand knows better and arrives at her place of
work for so more information.
Episode 13 - Pomegranate
One of Heaven's Gate's biggest backers and founders is holding a
living funeral to thank those that he knew before his passing and
the Countess as well as the children have been invited. Tatsuya and
the others feel a great sense of malice at the funeral, and the
Countess finds the real reason she was invited; her former associate
wants the children. -mike-
