This collection comes as a six-disc set in one oversized plastic DVD case. It has a nice big picture on the front of everyone’s favorite rebel sorcerer, Orphen. On the side, along with the logo, is a decent sized picture of Cleao. The boxed set may not be quite as nice as the thin-pack sets that are becoming more and more common, but it’s functional. The various DVD compartments occasionally don’t close very well though. If you’re wondering what the heck this Orphen show is all about, I’ll delve into a brief synopsis. It’s the story of Orphen, a rogue sorcerer from the Tower of Fangs. Orphen seems like a slacker who doesn’t want to work for a living, but really he has some pretty big problems he’s trying to deal with. It turns out his best friend and companion growing up, a girl named Azalie, has been turned into a giant destructive dragon named Bloody August. Orphen left his home at the Tower of Fangs to try and find a way to cure her. The Tower is embarrassed by this incident and are trying to destroy the monster. On his journey, Orphen takes on an apprentice named Majic. Also, a girl named Cleao tags along looking for adventure. The trio go on a variety of adventures trying to reach Orphen’s ultimate goal. This leads them to far off places and into dangerous situations. There are many friends and foes on the journey. The path they follow is unpredictable, and the adventure will probably not end as you may have guessed entering into the show. Be prepared to be excited and entertained throughout. My first Orphen experience was with the Playstation 2 videogame. It was one of the first games out for the system, and I picked it up to round out my game collection. I was pretty happy with the game, but the overall Orphen storyline was not revealed. Now that I have seen the whole first season, I am pretty sure that the story in the game takes place after the events of this season. I will probably play the game over now that I have more insight into the story. Orphen is great and this would be a great way to get started on the show. Buying in bulk saves money, so it’s probably in your best interest to pick this collection up rather than paying more for each individual volume. Orphen is a cross-genre show mixing fantasy, magic, comedy, action and much more, so I’m sure it will appeal to most people on some level. Orphen is probably one of my favorite anime series’ now, and I highly recommend it. -brant-
