Biozombie

Buy It Now

Sometimes I am wrong.  And when I am wrong I can admit it (although I will usually try to blame it on someone else)!  I was so very wrong about Biozombie...so very very wrong.

The first time I sat down to watch this film, I was excited; I mean after all the title has "Zombie" and "Bio" in it!  How could I go wrong!  My excitement however turned to dread when after 30 minutes I had seen precious little "zombie" and only some screwball kids to stand in for "Bio".  I began to think I had made a big mistake...BUT that's where I went wrong!  And here is why...

As Biozombie begins we meet two mall rats and small time hoods named Crazy Bee and Woody Invincible.  Woody and Bee spend all their time in the mall, partially because they work there, but mostly because they can hit on chicks and pick on the mall rent-a-cops.  All is going fairly well for these two until their boss gives them a call and wants them to pick up his car from the shop.  Seems simple enough, but you don't know Woody and Bee!  See these guys are like Bill and Ted, except they may say "dude" a little more.  At this point I was doubting myself on the wisdom of viewing this film, but director Yip Wai-Shun was saving the good stuff!!  The good stuff being...

At the same time (in a mysterious, deserted warehouse, no less!), there is a deal going down.  Seems some heavy money is changing hands to get a hold of a biochemical weapon that...wait for it...turns people into zombies.  Well, as things usually do in a zombie film, stuff goes wrong and one guy gets out alive with the chemical; cleverly designed as a soft drink!  So as luck would have it, this guy gets himself run over by our pair of miscreants, lies bleeding on the ground, whispers something about soft drinks, and winds up with it poured down his throat!!  One dead guy stuffed in the trunk and away we go to the mall.

As our boys continue to go about their business, Mr. Newlydead goes on a zombie making spree and turns half the mall into shuffling brain-eaters.  Our two guys are forced on the run with a band of survivors and play hide and seek for awhile before eventually having to battle their way though the undead Army.  Now, you will be tempted to think "Dawn of the Dead" here, but no, no, no, my friend.  Instead think, Return of the Living Dead...I mean we ARE talking about Bill and Ted battling zombie hoards!

So as I realized the treat I was in for, I began to warm up to this amazingly funny film and found myself laughing out loud several times over!  This movie is a riot, and since I myself work in a mall, I have often dreamed of seeing mall walls smeared with blood and brains!  Bonus!  There is one more underlying thread that bears notice...

Video Games.  Yip Wai-Shun, who also scripted this gem, pays MAJOR homage to the world of video games.  The characters use flashbacks of recent games of House of the Dead to remember the best way of dispatching zombies. Crazy Bee carries his GameBoy, with camera attachment, around to snap pictures and look around corners. And in perhaps the funniest moment of this flick, the surviving members of this little band are showcased as game characters (as in a fighting game, character choice screen), complete with statistics, weapons and rotating image.

I can't say how wrong I was to doubt this film!  it is hilarious and more than that it is a lot of FUN.  Plain and simple.  So if Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure mixed with Mallrats mixed with Return of the Living Dead mixed with a healthy dose of martial arts movie parody sounds like your cup of tea, than head to your local mall and buy this film.  Make sure Woody and Bee aren't there though, cause things seem to go wrong when they're around....
