Phat Girlz
|
This Romantic Comedy was written and directed by
Nnegest Likke. The film features the Hilarious antics of full
figured and proud comedian Mo'Nique (Queens of Comedy). The main
character named Jazmin Biltmore (sounds like something to eat) and
her plump sidekick Stacey (Kendra C. Johnson) are best friends. To
mix it up a bit the writer threw in an ultra skinny diva, Jasmine's
Cousin Mia (Joyful Drake). Mia tries to help Jasmine stick to her
numerous fad diets. While Jasmine aspires to become a plus size
fashion designer she works along with Stacey in a department store.
Achieving her dream seems to be crushed with every move she makes to
get there but she never gives up. Jasmine wins a vacation at a posh
hotel in Palm Springs where she meets her dream man, Dr Tunde (Jimmy
Jean-Louis) from Niger. Jasmine doesn't feel that she deserves such
a gorgeous man so she is a little suspicious of his intentions and
fights hard not to fall for this truly nice guy who loves big woman.
Jasmine ends up making a big (as in big not fat) fool of herself
when she sees the Dr having dinner with another woman. So she barges
over to the table where they are sitting at and begins making a huge
scene at and important dinner that Dr.Tunde was having with the
director the National association of medicine board.
Totally embarrassed she returns home with her friends only later to
come to her senses and takes a journey to Niger to attempt to get
her man back. This is in fact a romantic comedy so of course it all
works out in the end.
To me romantic comedies tend to be a little too sweet and Corny but
they have their place. Even though the plot is ultra simple and
predictable this film still has a nice message for young fat girls;
excuse me, Phat (Pretty Hot And Thick) Girls. That message is that
all people fat, skinny, ugly, beautiful and everyone in between have
something to offer the world. And that we should respect one
another. Now go hug somebody and tell them something nice. Or Not!
Would I spend 10 bucks to see it in the theater, hell no! But I
would however spend 98 minutes watching this movie as a rental and
not feel that I wasted my time.
Special Feature-Z
Feature Commentary by Director Nnegest Likke Supersize Size Dreams:
Director Nnegest Likke Video Diary. This Extra could have been left
out. It just seems to outline the poor organization of the director.
Basically it's just her thinking out loud for what felt like an
hour. Next time they should save this one for the archive shelf at
home.
The Phattest Guy: Tribute To Producer Bobby Newmyer.
This Extra really touched me. The phattest guy details how Producer
Bobby Newmyer (Training Day Producer) gave his all to fund this
movie. After dumping a cool million, out of pocket into the film,
they had to shut down production for six months because they were
out of cash. Bobby Newmyer then went as far as to Mortgage his home
to get more financing for the film. This shows how much he believed
in the story for whatever reason. Then he passed away due to
complications of a heart attack. Thank god he made his money back
before he passed away.
